A giant sleeps in the gallery alongside a giant pair of shoes made of black liquorice, a mini-mummy and a stuffed sloth. You will find all these things, and more, in this first contemporary art exhibition at the
Ipswich Art School.
From the Saatchi Gallery, works by seven artists have been selected for display at Ipswich. Alexandra Bircken + Thomas Houseago + Matthew Monahan + Will Ryman, Francis Upritchard + Rebecca Warren + Andy Yoder
These art works have never been shown together. All are sculptural using
unexpected materials from liquorice to scraps of wool. The artists play with the idea of size so everyday objects become larger than life.
These artworks have arrived at Ipswich Art School and are due to be assembled and displayed next week, ready for the private view on 9th July. This is a press opportunity to take images of the artworks in the gallery and talk to Colchester and Ipswich Museums Art Curator Emma
Roodhouse.
Maggi Hambling said: "My beginnings were at Ipswich Art School. Its restoration as a place of vision would re-focus attention on to the vital richness of this place and its continuing inspiration for artists."
Emma Roodhouse, Art Curator at Colchester and Ipswich Museums said, "It is a very exciting to be able to show the largest selection of Saatchi Gallery artworks outside of London. The Ipswich Art School is a fabulous space to display contemporary art and will once again a space for artists."
The Saatchi Gallery has been running for over 20 years and provides an innovative forum for contemporary art. It presents work by mostly unseen young artists or by international artists who rarely exhibit in the United Kingdom. This is their first major loan to the Eastern region
The 'Saatchi Gallery at Ipswich Art School' exhibition is on for 6 months . The gallery is free admission and will open from Tuesday -Sunday 10am - 5pm.
Once again the Ipswich Art School building becomes a space for artists and art.
Just don't wake the giant!
Would you like to be part of art at Ipswich Museum? As Ipswich Art School is rejoining Ipswich Museum this summer we are seeking
enthusiastic volunteers to help our team and join us in welcoming visitors to the galleries.
If you are enthusiastic about museums or art galleries, interested in helping visitors, willing to give a small amount of time each week, looking for an opportunity to develop your people skills or seeking to improving your CV or to gain a current work reference then this you cannapply to become a volunteer.
You don't need any previous experience of work in a museum as full support and training is given. The role requires volunteers to be on the galleries and serve as hosts, greeting and assisting visitors in
assigned areas. There may also be occasional opportunities to assist
with activities and events.
