Bandits and magic in south London 15 September-28 November

The Dulwich Picture Gallery in south London is to hold an exhibition in September of the works of Salvator Rosa, one of the boldest and most inventive artists of the Italian 17th century.

Rosa (1615–73) invented new types of painting with his allegorical pictures, fanciful portraits of romantic and enigmatic figures, macabre and horrific subjects and philosophical themes. His early landscapes were bright and picturesque, but his mature art is characterised by a free technique and a dark, suggestive atmosphere. Rosa was a rebel, radical, anti-clerical, associated with libertine thought, and often in danger from the Inquisition. Bandits, Wilderness and Magic is the UK’s first major exhibition of Rosa’s work since 1973.

Dulwich Picture Gallery houses one of the world’s most important collections of European old master paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection is also one of the oldest in Great Britain. It was mainly put together in the years 1790 to 1795. The paintings are housed in England’s first purpose-built art gallery, designed by Sir John Soane in 1811.

The Dulwich Picture Gallery is open Tues-Fri 10am–5pm, weekends and Bank Holiday Mondays 11am–5pm; admission adults £5, seniors £4, unemployed, disabled, students and under-18s free.

Bandits, Wilderness and Magic, is at the gallery from 15 September to 28 November; admission £9, seniors £8, concessions £5, children free.
