The stately home of Chatsworth in Derbyshire in the north of England is staging a special exhibition to mark the 90th birthday of Deborah, Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, the last surviving of the Mitford sisters. The exhibition will feature personal material and images, much never seen before, and a selection of her couture dresses. These will include the Devonshire House ball gown made in 1895 by Worth-Paris, which she wore in 2000 at the staff party to celebrate her husband’s 50 years as Duke, and the coronation robe worn to the Queen’s coronation in 1953, made originally for Duchess Georgiana in the 18th century. Chatsworth is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and has been the seat of the Cavendish family since the 16th century. In 2010, more of the house than ever will be open to visitors. There will be a new gallery for displaying art and treasures from the collection, access to the restored stone courtyard, far fewer stairs for all visitors and a new lift giving full disabled access to all three floors of the house for the first time. Admission charges to the house apply. The park is open daily 11am–6pm, admission free.
