Discovery Day: Cornwall’s Wilder Future, 16 November

Environmental awareness is increasing at a pace never seen before and demands to help nature recover are high on the agenda. So how do we aid in the renewal of our environment? Cornwall Wildlife Trust is organising a Discovery Day to explore whether Cornwall could be wilder, what that would mean, and how we could make that happen.

The event will involve a series of talks and lively discussions. Are Cornwall’s wild places enough – should they become Wilder Places? Is rewilding an answer? How can we all become Wilder People and take action to create a Wilder Cornwall? What does Cornwall’s Wilder Future look like?

The day will include presentations and panel discussions with experts from a range of disciplines. These include Carolyn Cadman, Chief Executive of Cornwall Wildlife Trust; Dr Paul Jepson, a leading conservationist, geographer and ornithologist who is on the supervisory board for Rewilding Europe; and Gemma Jerome, Director of Building with Nature, which supports the design and implementation of ‘green infrastructure’ – building projects that work with nature, rather than against.

The event will be hosted at Heartlands, a World Heritage Site Gateway set in the shadow of an iconic Cornish engine house. Heartlands is a visionary social enterprise project with a regional and national audience that goes out of its way to champion local innovation and environmental sustainability.

Stephen Warman, Chair of Cornwall Wildlife Trust, said: “The recent State of Nature report confirms what many of us had feared: that British nature is in a bad way, with one in seven of our animals and plants threatened with extinction and 41% of surveyed species having declined since 1970.

More and more people are realising how important nature really is and are demanding big changes. Cornwall Wildlife Trust must find the most effective way to engage in this vital issue. The Discovery Day will allow discussion with members, residents and supporters of the Trust to help explore what a Wilder Cornwall might look like and we will debate the role of rewilding.”
