Art History Course at The Bowes Museum beginning 27 March; sign up now

If you’d like to find out more about Art History then The Bowes Museum is running an introductory course which may interest you.

Our Assistant Curator of Fine Art, Bernadette Petti, will be holding six sessions exploring the history, meaning and significance of different art works and the techniques and theories that have influenced artists from Medieval times to today.

The sessions are:

27 March: Coming into the light:
Find out in this first session how artists began to question the way they portrayed society and reality in an introduction called “What happened at the end of the Middle Ages?”

10 April: The Renaissance men:
In this session we’ll look at how some of the great masters, including Leonardo, Botticelli and Michelangelo, created masterpieces of exquisite beauty.

24 April: A Golden Age:
In this session we’ll travel back through time to the Netherlands in the 17th Century exploring works by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Hals to find out why the Dutch were world leaders in science, military, trade and of course art.

9 May: Freedom and amusement:
Here we’ll explore the elegance, extravagance, refinement and adornment during the reign of Louis XV that artists including Fragonard, Boucher and Watteau made famous.

23 May: From the Age of Enlightenment to the Spirit of Romanticism:
In this session we’ll examine the competing cultures of Neoclassicism, Enlightenment and Romanticism and how these 18th Century movements changed the history of art.

6 June: “Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it” – Modern and Post Modern Art:
In this final session we’ll focus on contemporary art and the dynamic combination of materials, methods, subjects and theories artists use today to push boundaries in media and meaning.

The whole course costs £50 for all six sessions but individual ones can be paid for separately at £10 each. They will take place between 2.15 and 4.15pm.
Booking is necessary through our website www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk
