See the Ewe Scanning at Lost Gardens of Heligan 27 January

Join us in January to see the first glimpse of new life, as we will be scanning our flock of pregnant ewes LIVE in front of our visitors inside The Barn. Make sure you get here early on Sunday 27th January to pull up a bale and get a good view.

One of the ways we can be sure we are doing the right things for our sheep is to scan our pregnant ewes. This tends to happen around 70 days into their 5 month gestation period.

Starting at midday and lasting for about two hours, we will be scanning our Rare breed flock of Devon and Cornwall Longwools, plus our Kerry Hills, Jacobs, Ryeland and Herdwick ewes to find out how many lambs they are carrying. Knowing how many lambs they are expecting is very important, especially in the later stages of their pregnancies, as the lambs are growing fast. Any ewes carrying twins, or maybe triplets, will need a special diet due to the extra demand on their bodies.

The ewes will be brought to The Barn and nearby paddocks 4 weeks before they are due to give birth and will be separated into groups depending on how many lambs they are carrying. This will allow us to feed the correct quantities of pellet food to ensure our multiples arenít too small and our single births arenít too big.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that our rams have had a successful tupping time and we get confirmation of our Easter lambs' imminent arrivals. How many sets of triplets will we receive this year? Join us to find out.
