Ballycroy National Park, County Mayo

Mayo countryside by Barbara Ballard Ballycroy is located in north-west Ireland on the Wild Atlantic Way. Its 11,000 acres are centered around the Owenduff bog and Nephinbeg mountain range. It’s mainly a wilderness area.

The Owendufff bog area is one of the most important remaining ones in Western Europe and is the main feature of the park. The Owenduff River drains the bogs.

Rare and protected birds are found here and include Greenland white-fronted geese, golden plover, red grouse, merlin, and peregrine. There are also rare plant species in the area including ivy-leaved bellflower, marsh saxifrage, and shining sickle moss. Animals in the park include otter, Irish hare, red deer, and badger.

The visitor centre is located in the village of Ballycroy. In the centre is an interpretative exhibition of the landscape, habitats, and species found in the park and information on the surrounding area. There’s a short nature trail which, at the top, offers views of Achill Island and the Nephin Beg Mountains. Free guided walks are offered in July and August.
