South-east Counties

The south-east counties are Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey, East and West Sussex, and the Isle of Wight.

New Forest cattle by Barbara Ballard The New Forest National Park in
Hampshire was the scene of the death of King William Rufus. Beaulieu is an interesting attraction with its former abbey and motor museum. Alresford, home to Jane Austen, is a popular visitor site. Winchester is known for its cathedral while Portsmouth has historic dockyards.

Dover Castle by Barbara Ballard Kent is known as the garden of England. Hops, grapes and vegetables are grown for the food industry. Doverís white cliffs and castle are famous landmarks. Canterbury is, perhaps, the countyís most famous city. Donít miss its cathedral, a World Heritage Site.

Sissinghurst garden moat by Barbara Ballard The countyís most famous garden is Sissinghurst. Emmetts, Great Comp, and Groombridge Place Gardens are just three of the many other gardens open to visitors. Chartwell, home of Sir Winston Churchill is in Kent. Itís also the county where Anne Boleynís childhood home, Hever Castle, is located. Leeds Castle, Knole, Penshurst, and other stately homes are interesting places to visit.

West Wycombe village buildings by Barbara Ballard Buckinghamshire lies in the Thames valley and the Chiltern hills, an area popular with walkers. Medieval market towns and museums tell its story. West Wycombe village is stuffed with historic buildings. John Milton lived in this county as did prime minister Benjamin Disraeli. The county also has many historic homes and gardens, among them Waddeson Manor and Stowe Landscape Garden.

Arundel Castle by Barbara Ballard Wakehurst Place Gardens by Barbara Ballard East and West Sussex have much to offer, including the famous town of Brighton with its pavilion. Itís also the location of Hastings and the 1066 battlefield. Roman towns, ports, and the South Downs add to the mix. Castles such as Bodiam and Arundel are added attractions. Historic homes include Petworth, Standen, and Parham. Sussex doesnít lack for gardens either. Wakehurst and Borde Hill both beckon plant lovers. Winnie-the-Poohís home, Ashdown Forest, is in Sussex.

Kew Gardens Palm House by Barbara Ballard Hampton Court Palace is Surreyís pride and joy. Of equal interest is Kew Royal Botanic Gardens. Both demand a full dayís visit.

Windsor Castle old tower by Barbara Ballard Windsor castle in Berkshire is one of the royal residences. The county is also home to the historic Eton College.

Buildings in Oxford town by Barbara Ballard Oxfordshire is known for the city of Oxford with its ancient colleges, the Ashmolean Museum and the Bodleian Library. One of Englandís most famous stately homes, Blenheim Palace, is in Oxfordshire. It was Sir Winston Churchillís birthplace. Other historic homes, museums, and gardens provide enjoyable days out. Oxfordshire houses part of the Cotswolds.

Carisbrooke Castle ruins by Barbara Ballard Queen Victoria favoured the Isle of Wight for family holidays and had Osborne House built for that purpose. On the island, Cowes is famous for sailing. Scenic coastlines and charming villages are other attractions on the island. Carisbrooke Castle is a reminder of the past. Yarmouth is a busy harbour town complete with one of Henry VIIIís castle coastal defences.
