Touring Merseyside/Liverpool

Liverpool waterfront by Barbara Ballard Merseyside covers the city of Liverpool and its surrounding area. Liverpool is where Beatles fans go to take in tours and attractions related to the group of four singers. However, Liverpool has more to offer. Before the Beatles existed the city was a thriving port and naval centre.

Liverpool Maritime Museum by Barbara Ballard Albert Dock is home to the Merseyside Maritime Museum. This gives the background to the city's wealth in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the section on transatlantic slavery the museum tells the story of Liverpool's role in the slave trade, with a reconstruction of a slave ship. Later, over 9 million people passed through the city enroute to new lives in America and Australasia. The Seaforth Nature Reserve is located in the heart of the docks. Itís home to seabirds and waders, ducks and gulls.

St George's Hall by Barbara Ballard Royal Liver building by Barbara Ballard The wealth generated by the slave trade can be seen in the grandeur of the buildings, including St George's Hall with its Minton tiles, the Royal Liver Building (which is topped by statues of the mythical Liver birds) and the Walker Art Gallery, which contains art from the 14th through the 20th centuries. It focuses on European Old Masters, Victorian, and pre-Raphaelite works.

For a different point of view visit the HM Customs and Excise National Museum for the story of the smugglers versus the duty men. Inside is a display of the tools of the job, prints, paintings, and photographs.

Liverpool waterfront by Barbara Ballard The Liverpool Tate gallery is an outreach of the London based Tate. Housed in a warehouse at Albert Dock, itís strictly for modern art lovers. The Liverpool Museum has collections ranging from archaeology to the natural and physical sciences. Thereís a natural history centre and a planetarium.

Catholic Cathedral interior by Barbara Ballard Liverpool has two modern cathedrals, one built in the neo-Gothic style and another built in the round by Sir Edward Lutyens. The Anglican cathedral is the largest of its denomination in Britain. It has the highest gothic arches, largest organ, and heaviest ring of bells.

Speke Hall by Barbara Ballard Sudley House was the home of a Victorian shipping merchant, George Holt. Inside is the family collection of paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Speke Hall, an outstanding half-timbered Tudor manor house, dates from 1490-1612. It has original William Morris wallpaper and Victorian interiors. There are gardens and woodland surrounding the property as well as a maze.

Croxteth Hall Country Park, ancestral home of the Molyneux family, was once a huge country estate. The estate has three main attractions: the historic hall, Croxteth home farm, and a Victorian walled garden. More for plant lovers is found at the Sefton Park Palm House, a grade II listed Victorian glasshouse. Inside you will find a collection that encompasses plants from all over the world.
