Photography by Andrew Lawson
This glorious book will have you planning a visit to England’s gardens in the blink of an eye. Andrew Lawson’s stunning images of the country’s plants and gardens are worthy of being framed and can be enjoyed over and over again, bringing solace in the dark days of winter.
The gardens of England vary from a couple of acres to hundreds or even thousands of acres of woodland and parkland. In style they range from a plantsman’s garden to sweeping landscapes, lawns and lakes in the natural ‘Capability’ Brown style. Gardens can be either formal, perhaps with terraces and topiary, or informal in the English country cottage style. Some large gardens combine both aspects. Knot gardens, kitchen gardens, parterres, walled gardens, and herbaceous borders are other types explored in this book.
Author Ursula Buchan fortunately focuses on gardens that are mainly open to the public so you can indulge all your senses and truly put yourself in the picture. In the text she looks at the work of the garden creators and how they have influenced the gardens that exist today. Included is information on both historic and contemporary gardens. Rose lovers will be happy to know they have their own chapter, as does garden ornamentation, and kitchen gardens.
The author trained as a gardener at the Royal Horticultural Society’s gardens at Wisley and the Royal Botanic gardens at Kew. She has been a journalist for 25 years and writes gardening columns. She has her own country garden in Northamptonshire.
Photographer Lawson has contributed to many books, among them The Garden at Highgrove and Rosemary Verey’s Good Planting. He is the author of two books and holds the Royal Horticultural Society's gold medal for photography.
This book belongs on your coffee table for all to enjoy.
