Enamel advertising signs were used in the late Victorian age and lasted until the 1950s when technology made them obsolete. They were then removed from shops and disappeared except for a few thousand surviving ones. After the 1960s collectors began to seek them out.

This book gives the origins of the enamel advertising signs and their manufacture, distribution, and display. A section on Design tells how the lettering and pictures were put together. Much detailed and interesting information is given on all manner of signs. The book is lavishly illustrated with pictures of the signs.
Even if you arenít a collector, you will find this book is a fascinating peek into the background of part of our cultural heritage.
Christopher Baglee has a university degree in architecture and Andrew Morley one in fine art. They are both collectors of the signs. They organize exhibits of the signs and give lectures about them. They founded the Street Jewellery Society, a club for collectors.
