The Gardens of the National Trust for Scotland
by Francesca Greenoak

Photography by Brian Chapple and others

Gardens of the National Trust for Scotland courtesy the National Trust Since the National Trust for Scotland started caring for gardens in 1945, it has become the countryís largest garden owner. In 2005 to celebrate the gardens in its care this book has been published.

Under the care of the Trust are 35 major gardens that scan a time period from the late medieval (Culross Palace) to the 19th and 20th century plant collections (Inverewe and Brodick). Other small gardens are part of the Trustís mandate as well. Each of the gardens in the book is described in detail, including designs, plantings, history, setting, and historical and cultural connections. The Trustís policies for restoration and conservation of each garden are also explained. Details of soil and climatic conditions are given. The book also contains historical plans from Trust property archives.

Author Francesca Greenoak is well qualified as the author of this subject. She was gardening correspondent of the Times for eight years and of Good Housekeeping (UK version) for 4 years. She has also written three other books on gardening.

The main photographer for the book, Brian Chapple, has photographed gardens throughout Britain and spent several weeks for a period of three years photographing the National Trust gardens throughout different times of the year. Other photographs are provided by a variety of photographers.

Whether you are a garden lover or owner or just like to look at photographs of beautiful gardens, this book will be a pleasure to own. Before visiting any of the gardens a read through of its chapter will provide a more meaningful visit.
