England an archaeological guide
by Timothy Darvill, Paul Stamper and Jane Timby

England An Archaeological Guide book cover This guide, part of a series, covers remains in England from the last Ice Age until the end of medieval times circa AD 1600. The guide is arranged in 12 sections with separate listings for each site. At the beginning of each section a map locating the sites makes for a handy planning tool for visits, and each separate listing has map location details. Some listings include plans. For example, a plan of the modern town of Lincoln shows the location of visible Roman and other remains. The sites are also listed by archaeological period so the reader can focus on whichever period they are most interested in. 200 black and white photographs enhance the book.

A generous 68 page introductory section of the guide provides background material for the different historical periods into which the sites are divided, thus fitting them into the context of the age in which they were built. An invaluable reference section includes a glossary, suggestions for further reading and a chronology. In addition, a listing of museums and their collections will aid the reader who wishes to see objects found at the sites or that fit into their historical context. There are useful addresses that include internet sites for further information. An index provides a listing of each site.

The authors are more than qualified to write about their topic. Timothy Darvill is Professor of Archaeology in the School of Conservation Sciences at Bournemouth University and author of over a dozen books. Paul Stamper is an Inspector of Ancient Monuments for English Heritage, working in the West Midlands. He has published widely on landscape history and medieval archaeology. Jane Timby is a freelance archaeological consultant. With this kind of expertise, the reader can be sure of the authenticity of the book's content.

England, an archaeological guide, is a resource everyone interested in reading about or visiting historical remains should have as a part of their library.
