Somewhere Special is a gazetteer type book that features entries for hundreds of hotels, B&B's, inns and farmhouses that have been assessed by English Tourism Council's national rating scheme of quality assurance standards. Star ratings are used for hotels and diamonds for other guest accommodations. Emphasis is put on quality, especially in the areas of cleanliness and guest care. A new edition of this book comes out each year, so it is always up to date.

The criteria for inclusion in this guide is not range of facilities but excellence. Places with gold or silver awards have achieved overall quality and also the highest level of quality in areas of comfort, cleanliness, and service. The book includes detailed information on what is necessary to achieve various star and diamond ratings to help you in making your selections. No establishment with less than three diamonds is included, although hotels with only two stars are.
The book features detailed entries, full colour maps, articles and features as well as helpful hints. It is divided into four sections: the North Country, Heartland, West Country, and South and Southeast. Each section has its own full colour regional map locating the various listings, roads, towns, stations and airports. Each section also has interesting short informational features on a variety of subjects of interest to the traveller. The back of the book gives details on making books and an alphabetical index to the establishments. Each entry gives full contact details, prices, number of bedrooms and baths, months open and other necessary information. A photo and short write up of each entry is included. There is also a key to the Tourism symbols.
