Pevsner Architectural Guides: Introductions series
by Simon Bradley and Charles O'Brien

Pevsner Architectural Guides are delighted to announce the launch of a new series of Introductions - short books to inspire everyone who wants to understand a little more about architectural history and styles.

Armed with one of these books, readers can equip themselves to explore historic buildings knowledgably, to identify stylistic developments, and to understand the terminology.

Churches Guide The first two titles in the Pevsner Introductions series are Architectural Guides to Churches by Simon Bradley and Houses, by Charles O’Brien.

The joint editors of the Pevsner Architectural Guides have distilled years of experience visiting Britain’s buildings into these informative introductions.

Readers will be able to explore historic buildings, evaluate dates and recognize styles with the aid of these stylish introductions to architectural history.

Houses Guide The hardback covers have been designed by David Pearson, famous for his Penguin Great Ideas designs, and newly appointed a Royal Designer for Industry. These new, modern designs are reflective of the collectable nature of the series, which will provide amateur historians with all the expertise of a Pevsner guide in a condensed format.

Sally Salvesen, Publisher of Pevsner Architectural Guides commented: “Everyone who enjoys visiting a parish church or historic house will discover new information in these stylish and beautifully illustrated short books. They are an entirely new look for Pevsner and an exciting addition to the brand.”

Future titles in this collectable series will include architectural guides to Transport, Towns, Industry and Modern.

Simon Bradley joined the Pevsner Architectural Guides in 1994. He is the author or co-author of five books in Yale’s revised Buildings of England series, including Cambridgeshire (2014) and a paperback guide to the City of London churches. His special interests include the Gothic Revival and the history and architecture of Britain’s railways. He is also the best-selling author of ‘The Railways’ and ‘St Pancras’ (Profile Books).

Charles O'Brien is joint series editor of the Pevsner Architectural Guides. He studied History of Art at University College London before joining the Historic Buildings Department of the National Trust. He joined the Pevsner Guides in 1997 and has been author, co-author or contributor of six volumes in the series, including London 5: East (2005). He is a member of Historic England's Advisory Committee and London Advisory Committee.
