Georgie (Lady Georgiana, 35th in line for the throne) is at it again. Stuck in the wilds of Scotland at Castle Rannoch with her brother Binky and miserly, fun-nixing sister-in-law Fig for Christmas, she jumps at any chance to escape.
Luckily she sees an ad looking for a hostess at a posh holiday party in Tiddleton-under-Lovey, Devon. Anything to leave behind the cold, the pitiful food offerings, and the disapproving relatives, so away she goes with bumbling maid Queenie.
Coincidentally, Georgie’s wayward mother is holed up in the same village with Noel Coward who is working on a new play to star her. Georgie arranges for granddad and his friendly neighbour to play cook and ‘butler’ for the couple, almost completing the picture. The only one missing is Darcy O’Mara, Georgie’s true love. But, wonder of wonders, he is nephew to party hostess Lady Hawse-Gorzley and comes to share the holidays with her and her paying guests, a cast of characters in a class by themselves. Could anything be more perfect in this picture postcard village?
Horror of horrors, Georgie soon discovers the village is under the ‘Lovey Curse’. Bodies begin to drop dead, day by day. Is it the witch’s curse or is it devious doings by the three criminals who recently broke out of the prison on the moors? Will the murders, deemed accidents by the local police, be solved before Georgie herself becomes a victim?
Like Rhys’s other books this one is full of quirky characters, weird goings-on, and a clever plot with twists and turns at every breath-holding moment. As the story unfolds readers will enjoy sharing old-fashioned English Christmas customs with Georgie as she attempts to solve the mysterious deaths.
