Although many more species can be found in still water habitats the book has chosen ones that are most likely to be seen and identified. Some of these are freshwater sponges, hydras, water bears, worms, leeches, water snails, dragonflies and damselflies, frogs and toads, bats, fish, and birds.
Full colour artworks illustrate the species along with concise written accounts. Data of species included are size, general description, habitat, ecology, and distribution in Britain and the near continent. Layouts are easy to follow and artwork helps with identification.
The book’s compact size makes it easy to carry for field, home, and garden reference. A plastic protector is a big help in inclement weather. Particularly handy is a fold-out insert with at-a-glance illustrations showing comparisons between species.
The book’s sections are marginal plants, water plants, rushes, grasses, mosses, trees, sponges, hydras, worms, water bears, leeches, molluscs, crustaceans, insects, arachnids, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
