Inside, its beautifully-illustrated pages show how, over the years, the landscape has influenced the wildlife and the incredible human history of the area. In addition, the guidebook also features places to visit and things to see and do to explore the Geopark first-hand, plus an informative pull-out map of the area.
BBC Television presenter and patron of the English Riviera Global Geopark, Professor Iain Stewart said: “This guide provides the means to unravel 400 million years of planetary change. Who would have thought that rocks laid down in Caribbean coral seas or Saharan desert dunes would now nestle so innocently in the gentle coastal scenery of the English Riviera?”
The guidebook has been produced by Coastal Publishing, award-winning publishers of The Official Guide to the Jurassic Coast. The 64 pages of fascinating content were written and compiled by a wealth of local experts including historian John Risdon, geologist Chris Proctor and the English Riviera Geopark coordinator Melanie Border.
Stories told within the publication include how Berry Head in Brixham, a gateway site to the English Riviera Geopark, began life as a tropical coral bed over 400 million years ago. It also tells how the prehistoric inhabitants of Kents Cavern in Torquay lived in the UK’s oldest home.
At £4.95 The Official Guide to the English Riviera Global Geopark is excellent value for money and allows every reader to contribute to the conservation of the Site for future generations. Revenue from the sale of each guide will be used to support conservation and education programmes at many of the Geopark’s key sites.
Peter Sills, Publisher at Coastal Publishing said: “We are delighted to have been asked to produce this guide and are proud to be working with the English Riviera Global Geopark team in raising awareness of this unique area in the UK”
Nick Powe, Chair of the English Riviera Geopark Organisation said, “I’m certain that this beautifully illustrated book will encourage many to visit the area for the first time, especially given the wide distribution it’s going to get.
"Showcasing the stunning natural environment and cultural heritage of the English Riviera, the guide explains why the resort is ranked as one of only 67 Global Geoparks in the World. When it comes to must-do places to visit, the Geopark puts us in a completely different league to other seaside resorts in Britain. If you don’t know what the Geopark is all about, this book explains it all.”
The guidebook is available to purchase from various outlets throughout the area from Visitor Information Centres, museums, hotels and attractions to national and online book stores.
