Shannon Way, County Kerry

Slí na Sionainne

The Shannon Way is one of a network of leisure walking paths established by North Kerry Walks. This 21 mile trail goes from Ballybunion to Tarbert and is way-marked with standard ‘yellow man’ posts so that finding the route is not difficult.

It passes through varied and scenic countryside – from the uplands of Knockanore Mountain (267m) through flat bogs and old estates to finish in a delightful wood. While the full distance of the Way is a challenge for the very fit hiker, it is possible to select shorter sections and circuits for a less demanding ramble.

A feature of the walk is its closeness to places of historical interest – Ballybunion itself, Carrigafoyle Castle, Lislaughtin Abbey and Tarbert Bridewell. A guide map for the Shannon Way is available free and may be obtained from local tourist offices.
