Cuilcagh Mountain Park, County Fermanagh

Cuilcagh Mountain Park courtesy Fermanagh Council Cuilcagh mountain ridge (665m high) is the dividing line between Northern Irelandís county Fermanagh and Irelandís county Cavan. The large areas of blanket bog covering the mountain are some of the best preserved and most extensive on the island.

Mountain Park road to Marble Arch cave by Barbara Ballard Gritstone is found along the mountain top and forms cliffs reaching down to middle slopes of the mountain where shale and sandstone are covered with peat. Lower down is limestone, dry valleys, cliffs, and river sinks. Here is Marble Arch caves, a fascinating showcave.

Mechanized peat removal has inflicted damage to the area along with overgrazing by sheep. Fermanagh district council is working to restore the mountain parkís peatland and blanket bog in this ESA (Environmentally Sensitive Area) also classified as an ASSI (Area of Special Scientific Interest). The forest service has a large nature reserve on the bog located at Aghatirourke near Florencecourt forest.

The golden plover breeds in this area while the Greenland white-fronted goose occasionally roosts here. Other birds in the area are the merlin, ring ouzel, and dunlin. Some of the more common plants are sphagnum mosses, heathers, and sundew. Rare plants include starry saxifrage, stiff sedge, alpine clubmoss, and dwarf willow.

An interpretive centre is located within the Marble Arch caveís visitor centre. The Legnabrock walking trail runs from the Marlbank road to the mountain summitó6 hours return.

Open: daily from Easter to end of September. Exhibition, cafť, picnic sites, AV presentation, free car park, guided field studies.
