Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum

A view of the excavated fort from the tower by Barbara Ballard Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum is a World Heritage site. It is the excavated remains of a Roman fort (200 AD) and a reconstructed bath with a museum that tells the story of life in Roman Britain from more than 700 artefacts found at the site.

The site, one of the most completely excavated in Britain, has a 100 foot high tower providing views of the excavated fort, the history of the fort, and a Roman gallery all about the life of a soldier. The Roman gallery is designed as if it were the courtyard of the headquarters building. It explores the commanding officers house, a granary, a hospital, and includes a model of the fort along with a virtual tour.

The reconstructed Roman bath house by Barbara Ballard The Roman bath house is a full size reconstruction based on what was found at Chesters Roman fort on Hadrianís wall. It features fresco wall painting with underwater scenes based on Pompeii paintings. There is a changing room and cold, warm, and hot rooms.

View over the Tyne from the tower by Barbara Ballard An industry gallery tells about life after the Romans when coal mining and shipbuilding were the major employers in the area. Included in this gallery are the history of the Swan Hunter Co, ship models, and a computer walk through the Mauritania. The Wallsend colliery story is displayed in the coal mining section. There are original minerís lamps and replica tools and a short film presentation on the history of the Wallsend area.

A great choice to get to this area from London is by rail with London North Eastern Railway. London to Newcastle is a 3 hour journey. The journey is partly scenic, and the trains are clean and pleasant to relax in, so leave the driving to someone else.
