Buckland-in-the-Moor and St Peter's Church

Buckland in the Moor thatched cottage by Barbara Ballard Buckland-in-the-Moor sits on the northern slopes of the Dart valley with scenic views of Devon in all directions. Thatched cottages by a stream, a community hall, and a church are the core of the village with other population on scattered farms and cottages.

Views over the hills from Buckland by Barbara Ballard South-east of the village is a walk to Buckland Beacon where the 10 Biblical commandments are carved into large slabs of granite.

Buckland in the Moor church by Barbara Ballard These same commandments are found carved on the west wall of the parish church, St Peterís, in the village. First built in the 12th century as noted in the south wall of the nave, the south doorway, and the font, it was mostly rebuilt in the 15th century.

At that time the choir and sanctuary were added. The interior roof is a waggon roof. A rood screen dates from the rebuilding.

The 50 foot church tower has a stairway built in a turret on the south side. On the west side of the tower floor are medieval tiles. The 1930s clock face is unique.

The clock on the church tower by Barbara Ballard Instead of numbers it spells out ĎMy Dear Motherí. It was installed as a gift and dedication to his mother by William Whitley. The clock was made by John Smith and Sons of Derby. On the quarter hour the clock chimes play ďAll things bright and beautiful.Ē

Hammers that operate by a sprung mechanism hit the peal bells. The five bells date from the mid 18th century with three lighter ones added in 1932. They are rung on Sundays by a team of ringers.
