at Leonardslee Lakes and Garden
This garden closed permanently in June 2010 as the family sold it to a private individual who chose to not keep it open to the public. See also Leonardslee Lakes and Garden
Leonardslee is one of the largest woodland and parkland gardens in England, famous for its rhododendrons and azaleas. But it also has an unusual and intriguing attraction, Beyond the Dolls House.
Located in a building off the courtyard this is a miniature world par excellence. Itís all the work of one lady, Helen Holland.
She began her creations in 1998 with a greenhouse and potting shed 1/12 the scale of the real world--picture a six foot tall person as six inches in height. Exquisite in detail and accuracy, the world she made was a country estate and town set in 1900 rather than the present day.
Visitors fell in love with her displays, and she soon obliged them with a market town complete with an emporium, greengrocer, butcher shop, post office, laundry, wheelwright, carpenter and cabinet maker, church, pub, and school.
An estate took shape in the form of a mansion, entrance lodge, farm buildings, granary, farm garden, topiary garden, kitchen garden, gardenerís cottage, walled garden, stable yard, keeperís cottage, and stable yard.
All ages will be fascinated not only with the wealth of detail in the displays but with the outstanding level of craftsmanship involved in their creation. Plan to spend a full day at Leonardslee to take in the gardens and Beyond the Dolls House.
