And a magnificent setting it is. The 840 acres of gardens and parkland, mature trees, and the 230 acre golf course with the Maigue river (one of Ireland’s best trout rivers) running through it couldn’t be better. In the grounds are 180-year-old beeches, cork, aspen, flowering cherry, and monkey puzzle trees. Hidden among the trees southwest of the manor are ogham stones moved here from Kerry by the third earl. They date from the early 5th century to the mid 7th century. The inscriptions are in an early form of Irish. Near the stones is a curiosity: a pet cemetery with carved memorials to the Dunraven pets. Adare manor was constructed in 1832 by the second earl of Dunraven and his wife, lady Caroline Wyndham but not completed until the tenure of the 3rd earl. The house is full of glamour with its stonework, 52 chimneys, 75 fireplaces, 365 leaded glass windows, and woodcarvings. The place is replete with arches, gargoyles, bay windows, and 17th century Flemish choir stalls. The turreted entrance tower opens into a magnificent great hall. The minstrel’s gallery is impressive at 132 feet long and 26.5 feet high. It is lit with stained glass tracing the Wyndham history from the 12th century to the Dunravens of the present. In 1989 a new wing housing conference rooms and an indoor swimming pool was added. Arrive in the afternoon and treat yourself to tea in the beautifully appointed drawing room. For dining there is the formal Oak Room restaurant (crystal chandeliers and oak panelled walls) serving European cuisine or the more informal Carriagehouse restaurant in the clubhouse. The Tack Room houses a pub where live music can be enjoyed. . The grounds provide ample opportunities for walking, and trout fishing is available for an extra fee. Nearby stables offer horse riding and Adare Manor provides complimentary transportation to the site. The golf course was opened in 1995. A 14-acre lake dominates the front nine holes. A golf clubhouse, pro shop, bar, dining room, and 11 ensuite bedrooms add to the amenities. Nearby are 25 two and four bedroom townhouses available for short or longer term stays. A fun and different activity is laser clay pigeon shooting where an infra-red beam instead of a bullet lets you hit (or miss) a clay pigeon. Bikes are available for hire. After a day’s sport treat yourself to a treatment in the spa, housed in a separate building on the grounds. Massage and beauty treatments are available. Refurbishments carried out in 2006 include new carpets & furniture in the library, new paint colour, carpets, drapes, and furniture in the fine dining Oakroom restaurant, new paint colour and floors re-varnished in the minstrel’s gallery, a new swimming pool, changing rooms and steam room, a new elevator, and 5 of the 62 bedrooms were completely gutted and refurbished with all new bathrooms, furniture, and beds. According to the hotel there is continuous and ongoing refurbishment of rooms. New for 2007: The new Boulabally village is located a 15 minutes walk from the Manor House and within the historic estate. The 46 three and four bedroom villas offer a home away from home experience. Each is appointed to the highest standards of comfort and convenience. As a Manor Estate guest all the hotel facilities are available to Boulabally residents and include a courtesy car for transportation within the estate. A championship golf course skirts Boulabally Village, surrounded by woodlands teeming with wildlife.
