Willowbeck Lodge patio by Barbara Ballard This purpose built (2003-2004) guesthouse is so comfortable, so beautiful, and so perfect you will never want to leave. And, to top it off, John and Liz are fantastic hosts. They literally go out of their way to be helpful and accommodating.

Sitting in its own large grounds among mature willow, beech, and oak trees and overlooking a pond, Willowbeck is quiet and secluded, yet within a few minutes drive of Carlisle and roads leading to the Lake District of Cumbria. It’s also in a perfect location for the whole Eden valley.

The main lounge is striking. Its double height ceiling reaches up to a gallery and looks over the pond and terrace. In the winter there’s a wood burning fire, and, in summer, a terrace for watching the birds. A comfortable sitting room is also on offer and has a flat screen TV, DVD, and video player.

The contemporary clean-lined bedrooms are luxurious with every comfort and amenity you could ever want. Included are flat-screen TVs, broadband internet connections, hairdryers, bottled water, tea/coffee making facilities, and treats. The bathrooms contain a full line of toiletries, heated towel racks, and plenty of shelving for your own needs. Two of the rooms have a large corner bath and separate spacious shower with lots of power. The beds are fit for royalty—so comfortable that it will be difficult to get up in the morning. But breakfast will tempt you. From scrambled free-range eggs with smoked salmon to Scotch pancakes and bacon, the selection is yours. Preserves are homemade. Dinner, if ordered at breakfast, is provided and is a set menu. The meals are delicious.

Be sure to book more than one night here. If you don’t, you will wish you had.
