But it was ahead of its time 100 years ago, being the first hotel in the world that offered central heating and a bathroom for each of its bedrooms. Originally designed by Edwardian architect, John Evelyn Trollope in the elegant Edwardian baroque style it still epitomizes the best of that style along with contemporary updates by designers Nina Campbell, Tim Gosling and the Russell Sage Studio. The lounge is a perfect country house style retreat with its hand-woven carpets, gilt stitched silk wall hangings, domed ceilings, red silk curtains, and gilded cornicing. Light meals (soups, sandwiches, salads) are available in the lounge from 7am-11pm. The bar continues the theme with its red lacquer walls, handmade tiger print carpet, and antique burnished frames. The hotel dining room was transformed by David Linley. Take note of the three Swarovski crystal chandeliers commissioned by the hotel as exact replicas of the only other one in England, to be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The dining room offers traditional British fare. In the summer enjoy such treats as chilled melon soup, Rossmore oysters, glazed Scottish lobster omelette, cold poached Cromarty Firth wild salmon with pea shoot salad and new potatoes, and English Raspberries with a choice three creams. The hotel garden is the largest in central London and provides a quiet retreat or a venue for a garden party. Or you could opt for afternoon tea on the terrace. Just four family members have run the hotel since it was first opened by O. R. Goring, who was the great-great grandfather of today’s Goring, Jeremy. When you first enter the hotel you are greeted by a statue of O.R. Goring. An unusual twist is the fresh flower placed in his buttonhole every day. Famous visitors who have stayed in the hotel include Lady Randolph Churchill (1919) and the Norwegian crown prince (1937). In 1945 the King and Queen and princesses ate eggs and sausages at the hotel. Located next to Buckingham Palace and near Victoria station, the Goring’s location is perfect for the visitor to London. Its luxury is a treat after a busy day of sightseeing.
