A five star deluxe property
London demands more than a day’s visit, and what could be more convenient than having your own apartment in the city with the luxury of daily maid service and breakfast delivered to your door. The Athenaeum Hotel and Apartments is the answer, providing both apartments and hotel rooms.
Located in a row of Edwardian townhouses immediately adjacent to the hotel, the Athenaeum Apartments are one and two bedroom fully serviced apartments. The apartments have their own separate and private street entrances with video entryphone system.
I stayed in one of the traditionally decorated apartments and found having my own kitchenette a real treat. Equipped with oven, coffee maker, toaster, and dishes, it gave me the option of fixing an early morning cup of coffee, dinner, or a late night snack while still indulging in breakfast delivered to my door.
The sitting rooms have a dining area making breakfast (the paper was also delivered) relaxing and enjoyable. The Executive Apartments also have a clothes washer/dryer and a sofa bed for visitors.
The family owned hotel retains its traditional décor and atmosphere but provides modern amenities: televisions and cds and a video library for guests. Telephones, voice mail, and fax and modem link facilities are part of the picture. Room service is available 24 hours a day.
Originally built in 1925 as a luxury apartment building and run on the lines of a private club called the Athenaeum Court, the building became a hostel for air crews on leave during World War II. In 1971, the building was bought by Rank Hotels and underwent a two-year refurbishment before re-opening as the Athenaeum Hotel and Apartments in 1973. In September 1992 it changed hands and underwent another refurbishment, this one costing £10 million.
Bedrooms are large with king-size beds. Bathrooms are standard in size. Tubs are the old-fashioned small, narrow ones but are equipped with showers. The apartments are fully air-conditioned.
A spa with whirlpool/jacuzzi, sauna, steamroom, gym and treatment room is part of the amenities. A restaurant, bar, and private business meeting rooms are located in the hotel. The hotel offers a car pick up service from Heathrow or Gatwick Airport.
The hotel, just across the road from Green Park, is conveniently located for the underground, being between Green Park and Hyde Park Corner stations. The Wellington Arch and Hyde Park are nearby. On the other side of Green Park is Buckingham palace.
During my stay I found the hotel staff to be pleasant and knowledgeable. The concierge was a standout. I would definitely choose to stay here again.
